Elina Brotherus’ photographs are marked by a strong feeling of humanity. There’s some quiet, lonely quality to her work, perhaps best expressed in her early series of self portraits, where she documented various happenings in her life (Wedding Portraits, Divorce Portraits, I Hate Sex, etc). Brotherus is concerned with classical photography themes, primarily landscape and portraiture, but unusually, her figures frequently turn their backs to the camera. As a result, the image is not dominated by expression, or even really by body language, but instead by the vast, open, empty spaces Brotherus leaves for us to project our own lonely thoughts and feelings into.
